Desk Trays Tackle Paper Flow

Paper flow on the surface of a desk is challenging for many people. Many systems exist that claim to assist in managing this flow and they almost all rely on arranging various documents into a number of groupings. These can range from as simple as "in-box" and "out-box" to as unique as "for analysis" and "secondary review". Organization of these groupings can be as simple as creating piles on the open spaces of the desk top or a complex system of colored and numbered file folders in a specific order.

To make these groupings more distinctive, the paper tray can be introduced to the desk top. As many individual desktop trays as needed can be introduced to contain each of the groupings and prevent mixing by providing separation of the groupings. This naturally results in better organization of the workspace, with a corresponding improvement in office efficiency. It doesn't, however, make better use of the available space.

Vertically stacking the groupings of papers can make for better use of available space. This stacking can be accomplished with multiple trays and an appropriate support system such as these stacking supports. The stacking height is determined by the type of tray, the material the tray is constructed from, the style of tray and weight of materials being stacked.

The desk tray material is important for several reasons. The material must be strong enough to support the weight of materials, especially important when vertically stacking trays. Color of the material is also a concern in many offices. Whether the office decor leans towards traditional or towards modern, the color scheme of accessories in the office can have a range of effects on occupants. Many man-made materials are colored or painted a wide variety of colors to match or accent other items. Natural materials are often either left their natural colors or tinted or darkened with a stain. Occasionally natural materials are painted but this tends to be rare.

Personal taste should also influence the tray material selected. Metal and plastic materials are often considered to be "cold" materials. These are used in some modern decor settings and tend to be low cost. Several premium desk trays are made from natural hardwoods, a material type that is considered to provide a feeling of warmth. These can be selected to match other elements of the office space. Most often a complimentary wood color and type are desired to match desk surfaces, desk pedestals, office millwork, other office furniture or other desk accessories.
