Gardening By The Square Foot
Square foot gardening normally involves 4’ x 4’ areas of land divided into 16 boxes (1 square foot each), and can be an extremely effective method when carried out correctly. This guideline of 4’ x 4’ is only a guideline as it does give an adequate space to grow your plants in. There are many benefits to square foot gardening - it saves great amounts of time as it is so confined you only have to water this small area and in turn also saves the amount of water you use. It saves space and also means reduction of weeds as there is not enough sunlight for the weeds to grow as the plants shade them out, and not to mention easy access to your plants. Another big benefit (one of many!) is that the soil is not compacted as you water the flowers, vegetables and herbs from pathways, and hence produces a more fertile base for them to grow in. Square foot gardening can be truly beneficial and I suggest it to any gardener’s who have not tried it before.
